Five Ways to Improve Your Game

Because online poker involves plenty of skill as well as a dash of luck, any player can improve their game if they put their mind to it. Whilst becoming an online poker master is something that takes time and plenty of practice, there are five ways in which you can start improving your game almost immediately:

It is a good idea to make sure that you can make profits consistently at low stake tables before even thinking about going up to play for higher amounts of money. Whilst you can afford to avoid the very smallest micro-stake tables (some of which attract players who think they’re playing in a free-roll) you should certainly prove that you can make money when playing at small stakes before progressing to something bigger. Keep strict records of the games you play and how much you are winning (or losing) so that you can decide if you are consistently making money based on fact rather than wishful thinking.

Specialise in one form

Just because there are several different forms of poker doesn’t mean that you should play all of them. Choose one specific form that you like the most – such as No Limit Texas Hold’em – and then specialise in that, rather than paying at limit tables as well. Adopting this type of approach generally allows you to develop your game at a faster rate than if you played No Limit Hold’em one day, no limit the next and Omaha the next. In a nutshell, this tip is simply advising you to become a master of one game instead of a far less effective “jack of all” games.

Have a clear strategy

The number of players who sit down at an online poker table and play by the seat of their pants is shocking. Fortunately, you can get a good edge over these players by being far more sensible and having a clear strategy before you even sign into your usual poker room. This means knowing exactly what starting hands you will allow yourself to play and having the discipline to fold all the rest. Fold weak and average hands, play strong hands aggressively and you will instantly put yourself in a good position to dominate tables from the outset.

Know when to stop playing

You shouldn’t sit down to play poker until you have decided when you will stop. There are three possibilities here: you can stop playing when you have won a certain amount of profit, you can stop when you have suffered a certain amount of loss, or you can stop when a certain period of time has passed. Having specific “stop play” points such as these will usually help you to be a lot more focused for the time that you are playing, and you won’t lose money just because you’re tired and losing your ability to concentrate after several hours at the tables.

Take notes

If you don’t already make notes about your opponents at the tables, you should start doing so from now on. Most online poker clients allow you to make notes in the application itself, and your notes about other players needn’t be extensive for them to be useful. Even one-word tags such as “Fish”, “Maniac” or “Rock” can be very handy in helping you to adjust your game the next time you meet these players. And if you encounter someone who you would rather not play again, having notes will enable you to avoid them in the future.

As we said earlier, developing your poker skills takes time, but applying these five ideas could help you to improve your game even in the short term. Good luck!
