The online poker trap is an online poker strategy that involves ‘trapping’ your opponents with a killer hand. An online poker trap can be devastatingly effective, but it can also backfire, so you need to make sure you use it properly. Like the online poker bluff, if you use the online poker trap too often you will suffer, so here’s our handy guide to trapping your opponents safely and effectively.
First, understand what an online poker trap is. In the simplest of terms, a trap is where you play as if you have a weaker hand than you really do. When you bluff you are feigning a strong hand to try and get your opponent to fold, and when you try you are doing the opposite to try and get your opponent to stay in the hand and put as much cash in the pot as possible.
With that basic understanding in mind, the next piece of advice is rather obvious: only try the online poker trap when you have a genuinely strong hand. Fishing for a set isn’t trapping, and neither is limping along with a draw. For a trap to be effective you really need a killer hand so that, if your opponent sees your weak play and tries to bluff you, you can immediately come back over the top and take him down.
Our third tip is to trap selectively. An online poker trap is most effective if there are likely to be just one or two opponents in the hand. That’s because the more opponents you try to trap at once, the more chance there is of one of them getting lucky and catching a hand themselves. If you have the nuts then go ahead and trap as many players as you can, but otherwise wait until the odds are on your side.
The ideal online poker trap would be when you have an extremely strong hand and everyone else has folded except for one super-aggressive player who likes to bully people. In that scenario you could feign weakness and let the opponent bully you to the river before coming out with your own guns blazing. At that point he’ll either realise that you have a decent hand and fold (leaving all of his previous bets in the pot) or he’ll suspect that you’re bluffing and call you. Either way, if you have the best hand you’re laughing all the way to the bank.
We don’t advice using the online poker trap all of the time as that would make you far too predictable, but if you flop the nut flush and fancy toying with your opponents, trapping once in a while can be very lucrative.
