David Chiu, professional poker player and member of Team Full Tilt at Full Tilt Poker, has won his first World Poker Tour title and almost $3.4 million in Dublin, Ireland.
Chiu went heads-up against fellow Team Full Tilt professional Gus Hansen after the latter had despatched four players in just 22 hands. By this time, Hansen had a chip stack of 22.9 million, whilst David had just 4.3 million. However, the popular saying that all you need to stand a chance of winning is “a chip and a chair” held up as Chiu overcame his massive chip deficit to take the title and the spoils. Hansen, who had been playing for his fourth WPT title, had to settle for second place and $1.7 million in prize money.
The final hand of the match saw Chiu thanking the river gods, as it brought him an Ace to make trip aces, beating the two pair of Hansen.
After doubling up through Hansen on hand 33, the two men traded pots for 45 more hands until Chiu finally claimed the chip lead on hand 78 of the match. The tournament ended just two hands later when Chiu hit an Ace on the river to make trip Aces besting Hansen’s two pair.
Fellow Team Full Tilt member and seasoned professional Howard Lederer said: "David Chiu has been one of the most respected tournament players on the circuit. With this win, the television viewing public will finally get to see what poker players have known for a long time; he is one of best in the game."
Team Full Tilt consists of some of the best poker players in the world, and includes Chris Ferguson, Phil Ivey and Jennifer Harmen among its members. Between them, the players have won 32 World Series of Poker bracelets, and as David Chiu’s latest win confirms, they are a force to be reckoned with on the World Poker Tour too.
