A new record for the biggest online poker pot has been set by Full Tilt Poker players Patrik Antonius and Isildur1. The pot was worth $1.35 million and was won by Antonius during a high-stakes game of Pot Limit Omaha. Although big wins and losses have always been part of the high stakes poker scene, an online pot of $1.35 has never been taken down before, and gives Antonius record-breaking kudos as well as a monster-sized bankroll.
Isildur1 was on the button at the beginning of the record-breaking hand, and raised $3,000. Antonius replied to that move by taking things up to $9,000. Isuldur1 came back by betting to $27,000 and Antonius returned the favour by taking things to $81,000.
Isildur1 called and the flop was 5c4s2d. Antonius put another $91,000 in the pot and an aggressive Isildur1 came back with a re-raise. Antonius saw that Isildur1 had around $162,000 left in front of him, and went all-in. Isildur1 called.
With that kind of betting action you might have guessed that one of the players had made a straight on the flop, and you would be right. Antonius showed Ah3sKsKh for a low straight (A to 5 in poker is often referred to as a wheel) and Isildur1 revealed 6d7d8h9s, which gave him the chance to make a better straight.
The turn card was the 5h, so Isildur1 was still in with a chance to win, but it all rested on the last card of the hand. The good news for Antonius was that the river was the 9c, which allowed his wheel to hold up and gave him the $1.35 million pot.
No matter how long you have been playing poker online, or how successful you are, the notion of $1.35 million being won in a single hand online is quite staggering. Some will find the idea of winning such amounts quite inspiring, and use the record-breaking win as motivation to build their own bankrolls to new heights. Others will be terrified by the idea of putting that kind of money into a poker game, and will no doubt decide to make sure they keep a tight rein on their bankroll.
The good news is that online poker can be played at whatever level you choose.
